5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Herself, Locked Down, Moxie, Kid 90, Cherry

Herself: I don’t expect anyone reading this website to enjoy this film about domestic abuse but it’s a well-made and empathetic if not quiet and slow movie. ***1/4

Locked Down: The lockdown heist movie that nobody expected and I’m still not sure anyone wanted. This goes on and on and Anne Hathaway is charming but nothing happens until I was already over it. *3/4

Moxie: This world in particular definitely needed a badass teen feminism movie that wears its’ heart on its’ sleeve. I’m serious. Amy Poehler has got a mission and I appreciate watching it. Plenty of quality comedy cameos too. ***1/2

kid 90: Heck of a watch. Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster) filmed a ton of footage of her famous friends on a camcorder in the 90s, some of whom are around to comment but many of whom have since passed. It’s a raw look at being young in Hollywood — there are no answers here, just stories told and observations. The footage is only surprising in how young and normal everybody seemed to be… heck of a watch. ****

Cherry: Tom Holland and the Russo Brothers made a serious movie about PTSD and addiction. It’s really not that good, but has moments of brilliance. Ciara Bravo and Jack Reynor’s performances stand out more than Spiderman’s. ***1/2
