5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Godzilla vs. Kong, Boogie, Bad Trip, Mortal Kombat, Concrete Cowboy

Godzilla vs. Kong: Needed more Kong punching Godzilla in the face, less Paper Boi and 11 figuring out podcast equipment or intergalactic waves or whatever. A fun movie but way too much of a Godzilla vibe than a Skull Island vibe. ***1/4

Boogie: Boogie is a movie with a voice that tells a perfectly fine coming-of-age difficult sports phenom guy story. Real family and growing up shit. ***3/4

Bad Trip: A narrative story told with hidden camera pranks is a fun idea that can easily be handled spectacularly poorly. This is Eric Andre doing it and it’s fun, more a well-meaning experience than an actual whole movie. I liked the idea that everyone they ran into wasn’t horrible and just wanted to help out. ***1/4

Mortal Kombat: This took itself more seriously than it needed to, and look: I appreciate Josh Lawson but I’m not taking Doug from House of Lies seriously as Kano, especially when it just seems like he was instructed to play Gerard Butler. Dumb fun is fun, but I wish this was more dumb and more fun. **3/4

Concrete Cowboy: Kind of basic coming-of-age stuff with the exception of it being about Black cowboys in Philadelphia. Idris Elba is here and yes, he is fantastic. ***1/2
