Little Women: I had never read or seen Little Women before this, but pretty sure this is the best approach anyone is going to take to a re-telling of a classic book. Incredible acting all over the place: Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, and Laura Dern are HERE, as is Meryl By God Streep. ****1/2
Marriage Story: More about the incredible frustration and tension that becomes funny after awhile than the gaaaaahhh divorce sucks movie it feels like, with some tremendous performances from Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Laura By God Dern. A pretty brilliantly plotted out movie. ****1/2
Knives Out: This has one of the all-time great casts, with screen legends, old favorites, and newcomers alike all going big and having the most fun in this colorful, hammy, genuinely interesting mystery movie. ****1/4
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: This reminded me of the movie Jackie of all things, a different take on the subject matter than you’d expect: less biopic, more snapshot. The snapshot here is pretty brilliant though. I’m not sure Matthew Rhys’ journalist story was enough to carry his end, but Tom Hanks’ Mr. Rogers keeps showing up like a wonderful monster that makes everything must-see. ****1/4
Uncut Gems: A wonderfully frustrating and wonderfully Jewish movie with Adam Sandler being the absolute legend. Watching him play Howard could be enough, but the yarn they spin here is great. Also: Kevin Garnett. The most fun at the movies, even if Howard is such a god damn idiot. ****1/2
