5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Detective Pikachu, The Public, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, The Amazing Jonathan Documentary, Meeting Gorbachev

Detective Pikachu: When it’s focused on bringing the nostalgic little monsters to the big screen, this thing is a triumph. When it’s focused on being a detective movie with the most basic of basic protagonists, it just isn’t good. I’m in between on Pikachu with an attitude too, as much as I respect the savior of snark, Ryan Reynolds. ***

The Public: This has Emilio Estevez directing and starring as a social activist librarian, I don’t care how weird or convenient it gets this was good shit. ***1/2

Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy: This has a vibe of direct-to-DVD Ip Man but Big Dave Batista does a Batista Bomb and takes a hurricanrana so it’s not all a loss. **

The Amazing Jonathan Documentary: While I adored the twists and turns this meta-documentary took, it ultimately rested on the other main character being interesting and I’m not sure he was enough. A trip of a story, but it starts slowing down when it should be peaking. ***1/4

Meeting Gorbachev: Half history lesson of the end of the Cold War, half interview of Mikhail Gorbachev by Werner Herzog. If that sounds interesting to you, this is your jam. Some fascinating historical footage, and watching Herzog try and charm Gorbachev is incredible. ***1/4
