5 Star Movies: Can You Ever Forgive Me?, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Murder Mystery, The Female Brain

Can You Ever Forgive Me?: Here’s the thing – this movie is just GOOD. I can’t quite even articulate why. It’s a movie about some relatively silly people but everybody feels like a fully fleshed out human being treated with respect. Dramatic Melissa McCarthy is incredible, Richard E. Grant earns that Oscar nom. Occasionally funny, occasionally sad, always interesting. ****1/2

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World: This has always been an animated series with an extra quality to it, so its’ no surprise it ends just as well as it started. As I’ve grown, how much a movie with cartoons dragons and Jay Baruchel voicing the lead affects me has lessened, so I can’t say I loved this or anything, but I respect quality when I see it. ****

The Girl in the Spider’s Web: Claire Foy is good, but I don’t know. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had the Fincher/Reznor duo vibe going for it, this just felt like any other action movie. It’s an alright lazy watch, but not much more. **

Murder Mystery: The most Netflix of Netflix movies – Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, and a GIMMICK. Is it funny? Funny enough. Is the story good? Not really. But just good enough! Sometimes it’s OK for movies to be bad but relatively pleasing for all audiences. **1/2

The Female Brain: There’s good comic actors all over this one but while they’re fun to watch and the science this is based on is interesting, anything else going on here isn’t all that interesting. There’s a romantic comedy or two here, but all I wanted was to get back to the biology talk. ***1/4
