Blaze: Ethan Hawke directed this movie and Ethan Hawke is a person I’m glad does movie things. This film examines country singer Blaze Foley using three periods in his life and reads as a collection of sketches involving a very cool central character. Alia Shawkat is great as always too. ***3/4
Science Fair: Bright, sunny film about a bunch of smart high school students of varying interest in the lead-up to a science fair. ***1/4
The Old Man & the Gun: Robert Redford acts in his last role… or maybe not. If it is, it’s a heck of a farewell. This is an old school movie that tells a simple tale about Redford as a repeat bank robber and jail escaper that confounds all who run into him, and is more about banter between Redford and Sissy Spacek and close-up shots of Redford’s aging face absorbing the situations he has gotten himself into. ****
The Sisters Brothers: Lots of great actors doing occasionally dumb occasionally funny occasionally violent shit in the Wild West. Pretty good. ***
The Long Dumb Road: Jason Mantzoukas is being Jason Mantzoukas for an hour-and-a-half in a road trip movie. I think he is very good and so enjoyed this very much. ***1/2
