5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: The Incredibles 2, Crazy Rich Asians, Christopher Robin, BlacKkKlansman, Private Life

The Incredibles 2: The crew is back and it’s not some memorable classic but like most Pixar sequels, it’s a fun continuation of great characters in a fun world. Plus because it’s Pixar there are a bunch of little touches that bring it a notch above just yet. ***3/4

Crazy Rich Asians: A sprawling movie that is part basic rom-com and part a tremendous fuck you on behalf of Asian-Americans. Big set pieces, memorable characters… it’s hard to escape the fact that its’ title is “Crazy Rich Asians” but it’s a strong movie beyond that. ***3/4

Christopher Robin: A movie that is so earnest and warm that you just want to hug it, even if it is a bummer for a while until Christopher Robin learns to stop being a dick. ***1/4

BlacKkKlansman: This thing is all over the place but at its’ core it’s a fun as hell Spike Lee joint about messing with the KKK and that is awesome. ***3/4

Private Life: The first 30 seconds of this movie are an IVF injection and man that can suck it. This is a hell of a movie – the director, Tamara Jenkins, is 3/3 for excellent, engaging movies about difficult family situations – Slums of Beverly Hills, The Savages, and now this. It’s sad, it’s uncomfortable, it’s fun, it’s interesting. Good stuff. ****
