5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: The Greatest Showman, Brad’s Status, The Commuter, Humor Me, Downsizing

The Greatest Showman: Musicals aren’t my thing, but I’ll respect the set pieces. **

Brad’s Status: Guy who lives comfy life running a non-profit becomes jealous of his more successful friends but then finds out they are not so successful and yet is still depressed is not exactly a movie that feels of the moment. It’s a solid movie and director Mike White is great, but just know there’s a whole lot of Ben Stiller being sad. ***

The Commuter: This didn’t re-invent the Liam Neeson action star playbook and it didn’t need to – we’re not getting Taken again, but it’s a fun movie like this proves this is still a formula with legs. ***

Humor Me: Jermaine Clement! Elliot Gould! A fun little indy flick but not too memorable. **

Downsizing: What the hell, Alexander Payne? What a weird movie this is. The first 20-30 minutes are incredible, as the premise here rules: in order to save the environment, technology is created where people can choose to shrink themselves and live normal lives in communities of fellow tiny people in order to reduce resources. But then it just loses steam and never recovers – WHY did this become a road trip movie!? **3/4
