5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Suburbicon, Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle, The Circle, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales, King Arthur Legend of the Sword

Suburbicon: A dark comedy lax on the comedy, even if the ingredients are interesting: Matt Damon and Julianne More star, Coen Brothers co-write, and George Clooney directs – even though that last one isn’t a guarantee of an anything good, the first two usually are but this just doesn’t hit. There’s a lot of interesting stuff happening but it feels like it wants to say something and never really does, so you’re just left with this bleak story. **

Jumanji: Welcome the Jungle: The Rock has mastered the silly blockbuster, folks. He does it again here folks. ***1/4

The Circle: Interesting premise, interesting ideas, Tom Hanks and Patton Oswalt as lead villains in charge of a Google-like company, Emma Watson as lead babyface who wants to take them down… just not the best execution. But I still liked the idea of it and that it was made. ***

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: Effects, effects… boring. Too many cooks in the kitchen and the Jack Sparrow charm ain’t there anymore. DUD

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword: An interesting story on paper – hence why it’s been told a bunch of times – but this is just too bloated of a Hollywood action movie to mean anything. **
