5 Star Movies: Shock and Awe, Pin Cushion, Filmworker, Father of the Year, Love Simon

Shock and Awe: No matter how important the story is, this movie is just so overly earnest and paint-by-numbers that I don’t think it helped the cause it wanted to help. It’s also just a boring movie. **

Pin Cushion: This is a hell of a movie about a mom and her sheltered daughter and what happens when that daughter stops being so sheltered. The story and tension-building is excellent and they throw in some really cool fantasy elements. Great acting by the leads too. ****

Filmworker: A very straightforward but interesting documentary about the guy behind the guy that was Stanley Kubrick. Only recommended for film buffs. ***

Father of the Year: If you want to see David Spade wear the Joe Dirt wig again and do an Adam Sandler Boston impersonation the entire movie, then this is the movie for you. Otherwise, you get what you’d expect. Not good. Almost bad. But not completely bad. Some fun gags here and there too. And I like Nat Faxon. *3/4

Love Simon: This is a sweet, charming, authentic, fun feel-good teen comedy that just so happens to be about a young fella coming out as gay. It’s one of the better recent entries into the romantic comedy and coming of age genre. ***1/2
