Arrival: I was frequently on the edge of my seat for a movie about linguistics. Amazing performances, ideas, visuals, technology, pacing, reveals – this is an incredible movie. *****
Deepwater Horizon: Another Berg/Wahlberg actioner that’s pretty damn good. Didn’t grab me like Patriot’s Day, and most of it just a sad disaster. But an impressive movie. ***1/4
Live by Night: Super basic gangster movie… this hits the notes it needs to but would’ve been better without Affleck as star. **
The Accountant: Weird movie. There are parts of this that are interesting but it rides and dies on the premise where Ben Affleck is basically a god-like autistic guy that knows math and can fight people. It’s a cool concept but I wish it went less straight thriller more in on camp. ***1/4
