Hey, It's WWE TVWWE

WWE TV Match of the Week: The Miz [c] w/ Maryse vs. Zack Ryder for the WWE Intercontinental Title (SmackDown! 4/7/16)

It’s all about the push folks.

Here are two guys who have been around for a while – seriously, these are both 10-year WWE vets, and are very much WWE-style wrestlers. That certainly has its pros and cons. They wrestle competent wrestling matches that typically tell a story, but without any added oomph and a general feeling of “Why?”

This week also had the RAW main event 4-way, which I was tempted to put here as it was very good, but honestly that started a little clunky before closing really strong. And this match deserves some serious credit. This right here is a great match that built well, with Ryder ducking Miz’ attempts at control, and finished even better.

Both guys have had some solid Superstars matches in the past year, and the title change match on RAW was okay, but this really felt like their attempt at a balls out main event match. And it was really good. While wrestling cold Superstars and Main Event matches, Ryder has become a really great seller and working from underneath guy, and that shines here as Miz controls a lot of this.

The sit-out powerbomb counter from a top rope dropkick was a big pop moment, and the ElBro (sheesh) drop nearfall was tremendous. The Broski boot to the floor was also a fun thing you don’t normally see, and sold the story of Ryder pulling out different stuff to get the upperhand.

When these guys go out there with nothing behind them, it isn’t that great. Like I said above, it’s competent, but, eh. But when they are used to their strengths, with Miz as the dipshit with a hot wife who pulled the rug out from Ryder’s Cinderella story, and Ryder as the underdog who finally got his shot at the big time, it really really works. These two know how to work, and they finally had an angle that put some heat behind them too. And it came together into a great batch of professional wrestling. Woo, Woo, Woo.
