Welcome to Happy Wrestling Land’s Best and Worst WWE Matches of 2022. These are guided mainly by Happy Wrestling Land’s monthly Best WWE Matches of the Month, themselves informed by the general vibes borne from the thoroughly vetted and science-based Star Rating System.
Before the listings, here’s a look back at the year that was:
In January, WWE re-named their pay-per-view’s “Premium Live Events” and had two of them. Most of the good matches were still on TV. February was a real deadbeat month. March‘s on Road to WrestleMania did not have much of the wrestling thing, though it allowed WWE’s TV shows with a lesser reputation to shine in-ring.
April and WrestleMania at least provided more opportunity to “do something.” Much of the roster could still “go,” though the option for an impressive showing was rare. Two nights of WrestleMania raised the significance and quality of WWE’s wrestling matches if not the amount of them, though one night of WrestleMania Backlash in May brought them back to the baseline.
In the middle of June, the Wall Street Journal reported WWE’s Board of Directors was investigating Vince McMahon’s… Jesus Christ, all of it. Lacking morality can keep you in charge for thirty-five years, but using publicly traded company money to keep it going was something even McMahon – still wealthy – could not defend.
By July, WWE felt interesting again. Or at least something was happening. Anything.
By August, with just a few on-screen tweaks – also McMahon’s retirement – WWE had their best in-ring month since April 2021. The matches were all from TV too, with wrestlers put in interesting situations during Triple H’s initial crack at Creative.
In September, the crazy kids were still kind of crushing it!
October was slower in terms of “good matches” and Triple H’s honeymoon phase ended a bit before November, though WWE’s weekly TV still usually had a match worth watching at the very least — if not much more than that and The Bloodline.
As a turbulent year closed in December, names ranging from Gunther to Sheamus to Solo Sikoa to Ricochet to John freaking Cena brought a few more wrestling presents.

The Best 50 WWE Matches of 2022
The setup and stipulation felt like a lot of work for a SmackDown main event that was quickly moved on from, but as a stand-alone match this hit on some excellent face/heel notes and felt like (a more manufactured) Triple H/Jericho from 2001.
49. Triple Threat Tag Match – RAW Tag Team Title: Alpha Academy [c] vs. RK-Bro vs. Seth Rollins & Kevin Owens (RAW 3/7/22)
48. Triple Threat Tag Match – RAW Tag Team Title: RK-Bro [c] vs. Street Profits vs. Alpha Academy (WrestleMania 38 4/3/22)
The RAW match had bell-to-bell action, a big Chad Gable performance, and a pair of great RKOs. The Mania match swapped Rollins & Owens for the Street Profits but also had Montez Ford gliding on a tope con hilo, Gable doing an Orihara moonsault, and just about everyone contributing to a cool RKO. Lots of fun, both of them.
47. WWE Intercontinental Title: Gunther [c] vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (SmackDown 8/12/22)
This wasn’t as epic as it might’ve been five years ago, but there were flashes of greatness. Nakamura still has some tricks – timing! comebacks! bursts of charisma! – and you’re going to read a lot about the former WALTER as this list goes on.
46. Drew McIntyre vs. Kevin Owens (RAW 8/15/22)
45. Kevin Owens vs. Austin Theory (RAW 9/5/22)
Kevin Owens vs. Chad Gable (RAW 8/22/22)
After quiet days post-Stone Cold match at Mania, Kevin Owens was all over RAW as the Triple H Era began. He professionally wrestled McIntyre in one of those matches that’s booked cold but heats both guys up; he helped get Theory over by kicking his ass; and he kept the crowd on the edge of their seats for nearly 20 minutes (on RAW!) wrestling Gable.
43. Rey & Dominik Mysterio vs. The Miz & Logan Paul (WrestleMania 38 4/2/22)
It might not be a good thing that wrestling has been de-constructed so much to the point that Logan Paul can walk into WrestleMania and perform like a top-tier heel, but also: maybe it is? Having two of wrestling’s most reliable face and heels in the ring helped, but social media celebrity guy was the revelation: tall, jacked, exudes dipshit, and hit his spots with enough timing that it was evident the man put work in.
42. Pat McAfee vs. Austin Theory (WrestleMania 38 4/3/22)
This wasn’t Okada vs. Omega but it was the spectacle match WWE occasionally lays out really well when the boss says so, rewarding McAfee’s commitment to the job (and history as a pro athlete) by having him play lead role in what was basically a wrestling fan’s dream wrestling match. McAfee’s energetic and ridiculous entrance provided an excellent set piece that was amplified by McMahon and Theory’s endless gloating, the visual representation of what an entire wrestling fandom generally feels like it’s up against all the time. Great Michael Cole commentary performance too.
41. A-Kid vs. Charlie Dempsey (NXT UK 3/10/22)
As William Regal built a short-lived army in AEW, his actual son continued working for WWE rapidly getting more William Regal-esque. They kept the work committed and grounded from bell-to-bell, with A Bit for the folks every so often like when A-Kid stood on top of Dempsey’s neck bridge and rode it like a surfboard.
40. Ambulance Match: Julius Creed vs. Damon Kemp (NXT Halloween Havoc 10/22/22)
Julius Creed keeps passing every one of pro wrestling’s big tests; here he got a singles showcase in a big gimmick match and passed another one. Nothing at Halloween Havoc felt any different from a good effort that’d close or even open NXT TV except this, this gritty brawl surrounded by props (pumpkins! chairs! an ambulance!!) that could’ve easily been silly if not for a commitment bell-to-bell to violence.
39. WWE Undisputed Tag Team Title: The Usos [c] vs. Street Profits (Money in the Bank 7/2/22)
Their SummerSlam rematch was a dud and this had its’ downtime but overall was a quality tag with Montez Ford particularly standing out: charisma while fighting back, charisma while taking heat, and the audacity to tell an Uso to Suck It.
38. Sheamus vs. Solo Sikoa (SmackDown 10/21/22)
Young Solo Sikoa found his way on the main roster pretty quickly; here Sheamus went back-and-forth with him in a match Bill Watts or any fan of physical and credible heavyweight wrestling would just love.
37. WWE U.S. Title: Bobby Lashley [c] vs. Ciampa (RAW 8/8/22)
A week after McMahon retired, Tommaso Ciampa entered in Harley Race’s robe and nearly won the U.S. Title – plenty was happening on the perimeter, but inside the ring this was a tremendous big guy vs. small guy that won’t admit it type of match. Very similar to when Ciampa challenged the guy who became Gunther for the NXT Title.
36. Montez Ford vs. Seth Rollins (RAW 8/1/22)
What a great wrestling match: exciting, but with purpose! Rollins was wrestling like the top heel archetype he rarely goes all in on, while Ford was prepared for a full “future superstar” showcase.
35. Ilja Dragunov vs. JD McDonagh (NXT 10/25/22)
Just a nasty wrestling match that got to the point and ended in under 10 minutes with a guy passed out and bleeding from the mouth.
34. WALTER vs. Nathan Frazer (NXT UK 1/13/22)
WALTER/Gunther’s NXT UK farewell was against a quality opponent in Frazer, who can impress a crowd with his high-flying and bumping but has the extra intangibles to look credible against big Walt. Highlight spot was Frazer throwing empty shot after shot before WALTER just demoralizingly chopped him down, only for Frazer to catch WALTER with a rana… and get chopped down again. Classic.
33. Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins (WrestleMania Backlash 5/6/22)
32. Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes (WrestleMania 38 4/2/22)
Cody’s WrestleMania return delivered a very good but not great match, both helped and hampered by all the WWE style’s trimmings. The Backlash rematch lacked the Mania atmosphere but did open a show and was a more focused, surprising, and just better wrestling match than the first – which was already very good.
31. Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook Match – Winner Faces the WWE Champion at Clash at the Castle: Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus (SmackDown 7/29/22)
Drew and Sheamus just beat the shit out of each other, something they’re very good at. All the gimmicks at ringside distracted more than helped, though they did eventually draw blood and Sheamus’ buddy Butch did a plancha off a barrel.
30. Sheamus, Ridge Holland & Butch vs. Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser & Fabian Aichner (SmackDown 9/9/22)
After they stole the show (and year?) at Clash at the Castle, Sheamus and Gunther were on SmackDown in a match that wasn’t as epic but nearly as fun because 1) the Clash match cemented Sheamus as an unexpected beloved fan favorite and 2) both guys teamed with their mates. If I’m in charge of some department at FOX, I’m saying this: More Butch!
29. SmackDown World Cup – Final: Ricochet vs. Santos Escobar (SmackDown 12/2/22)
Tournament final, TV main event, and two of WWE’s most impressive young wrestlers (though Ricochet must be pushing 40 now) — this had a lot going for it.
28. NXT UK Title Tournament – Final: Tyler Bate vs. Trent Seven (NXT UK 9/1/22)
The last NXT UK match had few surprises but two of the originals sent it off with a quality main event showcasing influences of Jim Breaks, Shawn Michaels and Kenta Kobashi, all packaged delightfully for the sparse television studio it took place in.
27. Triple Threat Match – NXT North American Title: Cameron Grimes [c] vs. Solo Sikoa vs. Carmelo Hayes (NXT 5/3/22)
The Triple Threat Match has been bastardized, the WWE Triple Threat Match has been worse than that, but put the right combo of fellas in there and sometimes it can still hit. Here’s a great example of that happening.
26. NXT Title & NXT UK Title Unification Match: Bron Breakker [c] vs. Tyler Bate [c] (NXT Worlds Collide 9/4/22)
Tyler Bate has wrestled less than Brock Lesnar since COVID but he is still so good, from how he gracefully goes move-to-move to the way he can up the pace and create such a frantic environment that any result feels possible. Bron Breakker is another guy who grew up in the biz albeit played some more football, and while he’s playing a role (WWE main event guy) he’s stepped into that role with gusto.
25. Undisputed WWE Tag Team Title: The Usos [c] vs. The New Day (SmackDown 11/11/22)
The Usos’ went into this match about to break New Day’s record as longest reigning WWE tag champions, so the stakes were high for a great pairing of tag teams that have wrestled a lot of great matches together (but haven’t in a while). They opened SmackDown with a casually great tag that didn’t reach the heights of their best but still had great heat, double teams and near falls.
24. Drew McIntyre & RK-Bro vs. Roman Reigns & The Usos (WrestleMania Backlash 5/7/22)
Very fun 6-man tag that got pretty incredible off a few near falls at the end, though more purpose and a more sympathetic face-in-peril could’ve made it something special.
23. Triple Threat Match – NXT Title: Bron Breakker [c] vs. Ilja Dragunov vs. JD McDonagh (NXT Halloween Havoc 10/22/22)
It took time to find its’ way, but after Breakker did a Frankensteiner off the top rope to Devlin that Dragunov caught with a powerbomb and the crowd chanted This is Awesome…. it did get pretty spectacular.
22. NXT Tag Team Title: Pretty Deadly [c] vs. The Creed Brothers (NXT In Your House 6/4/22)
Pretty Deadly and The Creeds are both throwbacks to a simple dynamic of wrestler, the obnoxious and brightly-colored but objectively gorgeous pretty boys against the hard-working college athletes who turned pro and have their parents in the crowd. The good guys used suplexes and the bad guys used shortcuts, and Julius Creed has some things to figure out around selling a beating but he did do a brilliant Shooting Star Press at the end. Hot match, hot finish, Brutus Smash!
21. Money in the Bank Qualifying Match: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Sami Zayn (SmackDown 6/24/22)
20. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Sami Zayn (SmackDown 5/20/22)
Sami and Shinsuke have both settled into this era where they have more 0’s on their W2’s than great matches a year, but the last few years of downtime gave their bodies rest and are probably the reason we can still get these random little gems on TV. The May match was impressive for how little they did — a pair of two countout teases was all it took to make SmackDown the most exciting thing on TV.
19. Losers Join the Other Gang: Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde & Cruz del Toro vs. Tony D’Angelo, Two Dimes & Stacks (NXT In Your House 6/4/22)
Joaquin Wilde and Cruz del Toro have found this weird good spot in WWE where they barely wrestle but get to go off every few months, as they did here in this 6-man bout of gang warfare that opened a show with big stakes and exciting sequences.
18. NXT North American Title: Carmelo Hayes [c] w/ Trick Williams vs. Ricochet [c] (NXT Worlds Collide 9/4/22)
Ricochet stopped by NXT to challenge for his old title and have an NXT Black & Gold classic with young Melo Hayes, a match filled with high-flying and strikes and at least 3 things done only because of the TV cameras. There were plenty of impressive spots but they built-up to a major one where they agreed to springboard off opposite second ropes and collide with each other like superheroes. On one level it made no sense; on another they were superheroes. Just an undeniably cool match.
17. Triple Threat Match – RAW Women’s Title: Bianca Belair [c] vs. Asuka vs. Becky Lynch (Hell in a Cell 6/5/22)
For 20 minutes they ensured another WWE show started strong. For 20 minutes they kept a rapid pace while maintaining character and avoiding contrivance. For 20 minutes they kept the action interesting with bits of timing and strategy from three people who are so good at this, whatever that is.
16. RAW Women’s Title: Bianca Belair [c] vs. Becky Lynch (SummerSlam 7/30/22)
Bianca Belair swung her ponytail all the way down the entrance ramp and opened SummerSlam with another classic vs. Becky Lynch. It was missing Mania’s big stage and costumes — plus Becky separated her shoulder a few minutes in — other than that, great wrestling. They emphasized their signatures, Bianca’s strength, and her persistence in hitting the K-OD — plus it happened in broad daylight. There was a Spanish Fly spot that made every other Spanish Fly look kind of stupid too.
15. WWE Universal Title: Roman Reigns [c] vs. Seth Rollins (Royal Rumble 1/29/22)
15-minute runtime, lots of movement, stadium atmosphere, and a couple references to The Shield that caused my brain to exclaim, “You recognize that!” Roman and Rollins opened up the Royal Rumble with a very good match for the Big Blue Belt.
14. NXT North American Title Match Qualifier – Best of 3 Series – Match 3: Nathan Frazer vs. Axiom (NXT 10/11/22)
There was a lot to like about this match that felt like both a tribute to cruiserweight wrestling and the most unique possible thing WWE TV could produce. The two NXT UK graduates brought helpings of counter-heavy mat wrestling and high-flying athleticism and seamlessly transitioned between their offense without losing the feel of two guys trying to win. What I’m trying to say is they did a lot of cool shit.
13. Roderick Strong vs. WALTER (NXT 1/18/22)
There used to be a thing called wrestling. The wrestlers — they’d wrestle. Pace. Tease. Create. Hurt. CHOP!! This would’ve been a supreme TV match in any era, but on WWE’s NXT 2.0 it felt like an entirely different (great) strain of pro wrestling.
12. Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns [c] vs. Drew McIntyre (Clash at the Castle 9/3/22)
If not for the occasional boring patch and a finish that rendered everything kind of pointless, this was an incredible half-hour of wrestling. Roman stalled like a great heel Champion, the crowd stayed behind their returning Countryman on the comeback, and the two – two! – run-ins at the end were both pulled off flawlessly.
11. Undisputed WWE Universal Title: Roman Reigns [c] w/ Paul Heyman vs. Logan Paul (Crown Jewel 11/5/22)
The WWE Celebrity Special was at it again with a few major spots to distract from anything else it might’ve been missing, though this one had the added benefit of the Celebrity resembling an actual wrestling prospect and a dominant champion actually capable of the balancing act required to sell for him.
10. WWE Intercontinental Title: Gunther [c] vs. Rey Mysterio (SmackDown 11/4/22)
There’s going to be some great big-and-tall wrestlers 20 years from now that fans will be sad they didn’t see Rey wrestle, though I don’t know: Rey at 70 is conceivably still great. He stayed great long enough for Gunther to become a big deal on SmackDown and have this great match where he stayed competitive using the ropes, momentum, a chokehold and some big counters that led to big near falls. Such good wrestlers were doing such good wrestling!!
9. WWE Intercontinental Title: Gunther [c] vs. Ricochet (SmackDown 12/16/22)
Another great IC Title defense from Gunther; this relied less on Rey’s old man finesse and more on Gunther just chopping or stretching the shit out of Ricochet, who bumped all over the place but occasionally struck back (hard) or did some obscene high-flying maneuver like a Shooting Star Press. The crowd bought in and they delivered a late little MOTYC. Brutal, beautiful finish too.
8. Hell in a Cell: Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins (Hell in a Cell 6/5/22)
Still dumb that working with a torn pec was necessary to make a memory in modern pro wrestling, but hey: Cody Rhodes made a memory. The crowd’s uncomfortable silence after he revealed the injury’s deep purple lasted longer into the match than he and Seth probably would’ve liked, but everyone powered through and what came out was visceral, compelling, memorable, and so stupid it might’ve made a Star.
7. I Quit Match – SmackDown Women’s Title: Charlotte Flair [c] vs. Ronda Rousey (WrestleMania Backlash 5/6/22)
A throwback to the days when WWE women’s wrestling meant a couple ladies were going to beat the shit out of each other. For the business. In between the brawling and violence they packed this with cool spots (flying camera! swear words! kendo stick ninja!) and kept an unbelievable pace, like Bruiser Brody vs. Abdullah the Butcher if they had God-tier cardio. Their approach to the “I Quit” stipulation felt refreshing too, rooted less in submissions or convoluted setups and more just them trying to hurt each other and assuming the other would say they’re done.
6. WWE Intercontinental Title: Gunther [c] vs. Sheamus (SmackDown 10/7/22)
5. Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook Match: Sheamus, Ridge Holland & Butch vs. Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci (Extreme Rules 10/8/22)
Continuing 2022’s trend of Gunther and Sheamus being on absolute fire: their title rematch had all the fun and brutality of Clash at the Castle with a few more ad breaks (and that creative/weird finish), then they brought their lads to Extreme Rules for a great brawl that started the show on a note so high I’m not sure anyone else found it.
4. Anything Goes Match: Sami Zayn vs. Johnny Knoxville (WrestleMania 38 4/3/22)
“I can’t believe he took an Exploder through a table.” That was the first note I typed in my phone about this match, before I put it down and embraced the fun — no, greatness — alongside friends. 2022’s breakout star Sami Zayn and (some of) the Jackass crew went to war at Mania and delivered entertainment, sure, but also a wrestling match that brilliantly built-up to its’ finish, based around a gigantic hand prop and a series of mousetrap spots.
3. No Holds Barred: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Kevin Owens (WrestleMania 38 4/2/22)
Steve Austin’s first match in match in 20 years was not promoted as an actual match, and anyone who’s followed WWE for any amount of time could not have been faulted for thinking it would peak at a few punches then a kick and Stunner. Nope! Once the bell rang ol’ Stone Cold had a match that didn’t feel much different from his late-90s matches, even if those were pretty lean themselves. They brawled through the crowd, Austin took a suplex on concrete, Owens bumped like a maniac, and they took an ATV ride before the kick and Stunner. It was so… satisfying.
2. RAW Women’s Title: Becky Lynch [c] vs. Bianca Belair (WrestleMania 38 4/2/22)
Great wrestlers, characters, journeys, entrances, costumes, chemistry… the tone was set before the bell, the action stayed fast-paced and surprising, and the 3-count was downright exhilarating. It’s no secret the wrestling business is filled with waste, but sometimes a few things find their way onto the same plane and manage something spectacular — this was the best example of that from WWE in a while. Becky’s heel work is vicious for someone whose turn to the dark side felt absurd nine months ago, and it created a perfect storm for the rally from Bianca, who is really one of the if not the best rallyer in wrestling.
1. WWE Intercontinental Title: Gunther [c] vs. Sheamus (Clash at the Castle 9/3/22)
There’s a lot of different styles in wrestling and some of them even made it to WWE. This hard-hitting one bred in Europe is one of the best: Violent! Dramatic! FUN!!! Sheamus has a reputation for working stiff but against a willing opponent it made magic, not just from the violence but by the way the violence was capitalized on to lead to exciting near falls, all in the presence of an incredibly loud and appreciative U.K. crowd. An awesome and occasionally uncomfortable championship wrestling match plopped in the middle of a Premium Live Event.
