On The Count of Three: Though the mutually agreed double-suicide that’s the setting for both the start and conclusion of this movie is a little crass, I continue to be impressed by everything Jerrod Carichael does. It’s like he comes up with a difficult premise and forces everyone to figure it out with him. ***1/2
Lucy & Desi: Tenderly-made documentary recounting the careers and romances of the I Love Lucy duo, including a last few minutes that made me cry. ****
Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers: Every once in a while a movie comes along that is so clever and appealing that it just makes you want to tell all your friends and family, “Go see this movie!” This is like the anti-Space Jam 2, a blend of licensed properties used and referenced with such care and admiration that it actually all clicks. Andy Samberg and John Mulaney voice the titular characters as they try to succeed in a modern society with concepts like CGI plastic surgery and Ugly Sonic at Comic-Con. Pop culture fun for everyone. ****1/2
Ariel Phenomenon: On September 16, 1994, sixty-two students at the Ariel School in Zimbabwe experienced an Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. How do we know this? Through the remarkably consistent testimonials filmed and taken by a Harvard psychiatrist then, as well as the ones filmed now by this documentary crew with the students – now adults. This is wild, compelling, touching, shocking… all in all it is something special. ****1/4
Ambulance: Standard issue Michael Bay plus a lot of close-ups of flesh wounds. I don’t know, man. *3/4
