The Eyes of Tammy Faye: Compelling source material that is brought to life by Andrew Garfield and especially Jessica Chastain freaking acting. ****
I’m Your Man: A woman participates in a study where she lives with a humanoid robot played by Dan Stevens. An interesting premise is handled with an impressive amount of care, though Stevens’ commitment to the bit leads to a pretty dry performance and it ends feeling like a scene or two were missing. ***1/2
The Lost Daughter: Maggie Gyllenhaal cooked up a heck of an atmosphere in her directorial debut, amplified by incredible performances from Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley her younger self. ****
Being the Ricardos: I can’t argue with the point that a movie about Lucille Ball should’ve been a little funnier, but the parts of this that work are so good and could usually be found in the performances of the main four: Kidman and Bardem as Lucy and Desi, J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda as Bill and Vivian. Lots of good lines delivered brilliantly. ****
Don’t Look Up: I kind of liked this, or at least parts of it. I liked the idea of it. But it didn’t totally work, or at least it felt like it kept getting distracted by satirizing other things while it tried to satirize one or two important things. I was confused while it was lapped with praise and Adam McKay was heralded as a serious genius, until Kareem Abdul-Jabar of all people helped validate my opinion when he passingly described it as “bloated and obvious.” On point, Cap. ***1/4
