5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: The Nowhere Inn, In the Heights, The Velvet Underground, Red Notice, Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings

The Nowhere Inn: St. Vincent wrote a mockumentary with Carrie Brownstein. I wish they could’ve sustained the momentum earned from a fun logline and quality opening scene, but they didn’t really. Fun idea, OK movie. **3/4

In the Heights: Good songs, choreography, and a general happy vibe throughout kept this musical buzzing even if it was a little forgettable. ***1/2

The Velvet Underground: A variety show of a documentary, comments and songs loosely affiliated with the topic at hand from Todd Haynes, who is a straight-up auteur. I liked it. ****

Red Notice: Something about a valuable egg and too much money. This movie might have killed Netflix. DUD

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: This had one of the most under-the-radar Marvel releases I can remember, but it was also one of their best efforts since at least Black Panther as far as introducing a new hero and making him and his world stand out as extra cool. Some of the coolest fight scenes Marvel has delivered maybe ever, too. ***3/4
