5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Jungle Cruise, Cry Macho, Zola, Annette, Cryptozoo

Jungle Cruise: This runs hilariously too long (really could’ve used more animals too), but don’t let anybody ever tell you The Rock and Emily Blunt can’t carry a movie. Movie stars. ***

Cry Macho: Clint Eastwood just keeps getting away with it. There’s something to a 91-year-old with a heart of gold trotting around a Western (especially one made in 2021), but he’s also hooking up with chicks and teaching young minorities lessons and at some point that wears a little thin. ***

Zola: Best movie I’ve seen based on a Twitter thread, and for a movie based on a Twitter thread it definitely puts in work to nail that tone. Riley Keough absolutely goes for it too. A wild and unsettling road trip. ***1/2

Annette: Adam Driver sings while performing cunnilingus in one of the first scenes, which is one of the more “are you with us or not?” moments I’ve seen from a film in a while. It’s a little brooding musical, a little Michel Gondry tribute, and there’s scenes interspersed of bad stand-up comedy… the tone could be all over the place but this wonderfully weird movie always seemed to know what it wanted to do. Not for everybody, but for those it is for it is a great time at the movies. ****1/4

Cryptozoo: Between this and Annette the Very Weird Movie is having a moment, and if you are willing to watch an adult cartoon about a sort of human-animal hybrid crimefighting organization then I cannot recommend this enough. If the story wasn’t strange and engaging enough, every single frame of animation has something unique or hilarious happening. ****1/2
