5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Zappa, A Glitch in the Matrix, Malcolm & Marie, Falling, Space Sweepets

Zappa: Given the archival footage approach it felt a little all over the place, but this is a real portrait of an artist, an ass, a genius. ***1/2

Glitch in the Matrix: Your tolerance for a documentary that’s premise is, “Are we living in a simulation?” may guide how you feel about this, but I loved this whole crazy messy thing. The first scene is a real attention-grabber and though the exploration doesn’t always stay fascinating, it definitely stays weird. **3/4

Malcolm & Marie: A COVID-era movie with Zendaya and John David Washington arguing for almost two hours. It rules. It’s definitely done by people who are maybe spending a little too much time with the movies, but this was some heavyweight acting. ****

Falling: Alzheimer’s movies are all over today so this was a tough sell for me but (director/star) Viggo Mortensen, Laura Linney, and Lance Henriksen (Gen. Shepherd from Modern Warfare 2) make it work SO well. Carefully filmed, genuinely entertaining, and doesn’t pull punches about the past and present. ****1/4

Space Sweepers: We’re transporting a 7-year-old nuclear weapon girl, folks. The world needed a stupid-ass occasionally violent but mostly dumb fun South Korean/English space epic like this. I’m serious. ***3/4
