Performance Review – AEW Dynamite: New Year’s Smash Night 1 (1/6/21)

Overall Evaluation and Achieved Goals

It’s a New Year in America and on January the 6th there was both an Idiot’s Insurrection and four hours of first run wrestling on prime time cable TV. I don’t have a lot more to say, other than about how that fact may say something.

Still feels weird just moving on after the Brodie Lee show.

Performance: 3.5 / 5.0 (VERY GOOD)

Areas of Excellence Within Performance

Kenny Omega vs. Rey Fénix for the AEW World Title. C’mon. This is the match you show somebody. Rey did six spots that blew my mind in an era you’d think my mind was exhausted. I loved the buzzworthy and Bullet Clubby close of the show with the Gallows & Anderson debut and The Young Bucks; loved Kenny’s “You made me flip the switch…” heel line at the very end even more.

BTW – none of this Kenny Omega stuff works without those Cleaner Dancers. NONE OF IT.

The future is always in good wrestling, but it’s also in meme wrestling. The Snoop Dogg splash with Cody Rhodes cheering him on was both.

There is plenty of stuff on AEW every week now that if not excellent is at least pretty good and might hook somebody because they thought it was funny or interesting.

This week had The Acclaimed’s John Cena rap, a crazy 8-man tag, Jon Moxley’s promo, the SCU angle, well-spoken Wardlow beating Jake Hager clean, The Fam and Varsity Blondes getting exposure at the end, Taz losing his mind over Sting’s snow machine, and HOOK’s white shirt tucked into khaki pants look.

The Darby Allin/Brian Cage go-home promo was tremendous too.

Suggested Areas of Improvement

Chris Jericho probably could’ve left commentary for Wardlow/Hager if that was all he was gonna do.

Hikaru Shida/Abadon for the AEW Women’s World Title was both too much and not enough, a match and division in need of an identity.

Loved Kenny/Fenix, though there is still more work to do by Kenny and AEW to re-define the Championship Match enough that something like this will consistently feel more like a big match than a fun one. Does that make sense?
