5 Star Movies: Small Axe – Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Red White and Blue, Alex Wheatle, Education

Small Axe – Mangrove: Plenty of bad movies out there, nice to watch one where I was drawn into the characters and became frustrated and empathetic as I watched the layered story unfold. Learned a lot too. The Small Axe series is great and this might be my favorite of them all, an incredible mission statement right away. *****

Small Axe – Lovers Rock: The word rock is whatever you want it to be. Simple love story, incredible atmosphere – enter the party and have the time of your life. ****1/2

Small Axe – Red, White & Blue: Good character study with a phenomenal performance from John Boyega as a cop who tries to change the system from within. None of this falls to cliché either. ****1/4

Small Axe – Alex Wheatle: The Small Axe film that hit me the least, more rioting set pieces than character study but still a quality bit of filmmaking that made me want to know so much more about Alex Wheatle. ****

Small Axe – Education: Incredible movie, and at just over an hour tbe efficiency was both impresssice and appreciated. A terrible reality of history is filmed with empathy and care. *****
