Performance Review – AEW Dynamite (4/15/20)

Overall Evaluation and Achieved Goals

Love a tournament. Loved the pre-tape bits. Loved the main event predictions from noted sports commentators such as Ariel Helwani, Ron Funches, Taz, and Sammy Guevera.

May not be responsible that there’s so many people in the crowd but it sure makes the show feel less awkward and terrible.

I appreciate the boys and girls getting more time in the ring but some of it’s kind of a bore and occasionally not credible. Either way, lots of chicken salad out of chicken shit and whatnot.

Areas of Excellence Within Performance

Britt Baker is a highlight of every Dynamite. She not only knows how to work, but to keep working with every movement she makes. A talent.

Colt Cabana‘s personality in his promo came off as so straight-up and humble, something I’ve always appreciated about him. It is very cool to see him finally doing something with a national company.

Taz spending time breaking down Jake Hager‘s triangle choke was the greatest way of building up a terrible match.

The Inner Circle doing their take on SNL at Home was fun, even with some invisible camera filming them doing a FaceTime conversation with each other. Sammy Guevera especially crushed it.

I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t say the Shawn Spears squash got to the point.

Suggested Areas of Improvement

Maybe get more to the point with some things, especially when you’ve got so many guys just standing around in the crowd. Colt Cabana vs. Lance Archer in Round 1 of the TNT Championship Tournament had a quality comeback and finish but not much beyond that.

Suge D might be good some day, though he does have a fantastic t-shirt that I’d like to buy.

Kip Sabian springing off the turnbuckle to stomp on Chuck Taylor as he rolled into the ring was a pretty stupid way to setup heat, and despite the occasional cool thing these fellows lost me.

Jon Moxley vs. Jake Hager for the AEW World Title in an Empty Arena match was real bad. Mox going toe-to-toe with MMA guy at MMA stuff early was not good, and once they started traveling around the arena they looked like WWE-trained guys brawling in a crowd as opposed to unleashed wrestling superstars held back by years of micro-management. 30 minutes and nothing happened.

Top Plays of the Week

3. “If there’s nobody in the arena, why do ya need steel chairs?”: In the middle of the bore that was the Empty Arena match, Jim Ross cracked me up.
2. Britt Baker’s Curb Stomp: Nasty.
1. Lance Archer’s Pouce: Hope Monty Brown gave his blessing.
