5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: Little, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Between Two Ferns: The Movie, Late Night, Diamantino

Little: There’s charm here but the body swap and mean boss lady learns to be nice gimmicks can only be utilized so many ways. I normally like Regina Hall but she went a little over-the-top here too. ***

Godzilla: King of the Monsters: An awful, horrible movie that is hilariously awesome from time to time. Lots of awesome stupid monster fights in between all the lame drama with Eleven from Stranger Things. ***1/4

Between Two Ferns: The Movie: Comedy’s subjective, but this is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long long time. Zach Galifianakis is a genius, the cameo list is impressive, the celebrities are game, and somewhere deep inside the awful questions is the kindest sweetest approach to comedy there is today. Bonus points for Lauren Lapkus having a major role. I laughed out loud a lot, and I hope you do too. ****1/4

Late Night: Movies about show business are tough. Everything happening on-screen I liked: Emma Thompson as a badass, Mindy Kaling as Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz as an overrated white douche comedian, Dan from Veep not being a jackass. It just felt a little too on-the-nose and preachy for me to fully sink myself into it, and this is an era where I feel like stuff is wrongly called too on-the-nose and preachy all the time… in this case though that’s all I can say to describe it. Plus I’m not sure they ever got over that anyone involved in the funny late night show is actually funny. I enjoyed it, I just had higher hopes for it. ***1/2

Diamantino: An interesting trip of a movie about a famous soccer star who retires and adopts a refugee with a secret. There’s also a couple scenes with huge magical fluffy dogs. If you’re into surreal, you’ll appreciate this. ***1/2
