5 Star Movies: The Mule, Beautiful Boy, Ben is Back, Mid90s, Never Goin’ Back

The Mule: Honestly, the John Mulaney and Pete Davidson thing about this on Weekend Update is the only thing that accurately captures just what was going on here. It’s an uneven movie with Clint Eastwood being Clint Eastwood as an elderly drug mule that’s sometimes good solid fun and sometimes completely ridiculous. ***

Beautiful Boy: A bleak movie, with a performance from Steve Carell that is both heart-breaking and slightly annoying. There’s a lot of great acting here but it can be a bit of a chore. **3/4

Ben is Back: Lucas Hedges is a talent but this was a strange movie about a young man who returns to home to his family after spending time in rehab. Shockingly, problems develop. There’s some good stuff here and there but then it turns into some kind of Julia Roberts-led thriller at the end and it lost me. **1/2

Mid90s: Another great Lucas Hedges performance, this 90s teenage guy wearing baggy hip hop shirts was an amazing character. And this is a heck of a movie, a slice of life for a young kid trying to figure out this whole growing up thing alongside some kids who are a little past that. Good music, interesting characters… after you see Kids any movie like this is probably going to feel a little safe, but Jonah Hill done good for the first director gig. ***3/4

Never Goin’ Back: A couple bad bitches just trying to go about their day get into some deep trouble. Nothing is solved, but it’s a blast to watch play out. ***1/2
