5 Star Movies

5 Star Movies: First Man, The Oath, The Hate U Give, The Front Runner, Robin Hood

First Man: A movie I appreciated for the Ryan Gosling lead performance and the way it took this huge story and made every moment seem so human, but there also sure was a lot of standing around and talking about stuff for this two hour and twenty minute space movie. What I’m trying to say is I liked it but it dragged. ***1/2

The Oath: Whatever ol’ Ike Barinholtz, who I like a lot, was going for, he did not quite hit. I think. This isn’t a conversation-starter, it’s a movie with some fun comedic performances and a premise that wears thin after a while. **1/2

The Hate U Give: OK this was a phenomenal movie but that Russell Hornsby as the dad didn’t get an Oscar nomination, not even a freaking Golden Globe, is unreal. A special movie that tells a story about not just race and police but family and life and just trying to grow up and be a god damn person. The conversation endures. ****1/2

The Front Runner: Not exactly great, but a straightforward movie about a very interesting political story that stays entertaining thanks to some well-cast comedy guys and Hugh Jackman reminding everybody he can become somebody else without song and dance. ***1/4

Robin Hood: I’m not over the Robin Hood tale, but I am over the Robin Hood tale being told as some kind of military action movie where Jamie Foxx is doing an English accent. *
