Happy Thoughts – WWF Old School (Boston Garden 4/26/86)

5,000 strong at the Boston Garden got the B-show this evening, as Hogan vs. Savage was headlining in Detroit in front of over 20,000.

Missing from the WWE Network: Tony Garea vs. Mr. X, Moondog Spot vs. Jose Luis Rivera, King Tonga vs. Tiger Chung Lee, Lanny Poffo vs. Psycho Capone, and Ted Arcidi vs. Big John Studd. I’m good.

1. Dan Spivey vs. Magnificent Muraco w/ Mr. Fuji
This is most Muraco matches, some impressive stalling and selling but also a lot of boring. What I was most struck by was their use of inanimate objects here. The barricade at Boston Garden is huge so when big Spivey is sent hurdling into it it’s impressive. Spivey also sends Muraco over the top rope with a dropkick and he lands feet first on the table, which doesn’t break. Muraco teases suplexing Spivey over the top through it but Spivey reverses it, then Muraco counters it into a cradle for 3. *3/4

2. The British Bulldogs vs. The Dream Team w/ “Luscious” Johnny Valiant
This was supposed to be a WWF World Tag Team Titles match, but Dynamite had a “serious illness” in his family (oh know what did he do). It wasn’t a great card to begin with, but this really suffered from the loss of Dynamite and Terry Funk. They ran a few fine wrestling sequences here but there’s a long Dream Team beatdown and let me tell you folks they don’t exactly seem like the Dream Team. Valiant crotches Davey Boy and Valentine covers for 3. **

3. Junkyard Dog, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat & Haiti Kid vs. Hoss Funk, Jimmy Jack Funk & Jimmy Hart
Gimmicks, baby. Ricky Steamboat is generally incredible here but otherwise it’s all very mildly fun sports entertainment. It’s crazy that they put a mask on a guy with similar hair to Terry who tried to do his mannerisms. Dory feels out of place in the WWF, way moreso without Terry at his side. And JYD just takes heat and tags out. Steamboat keeps it moving – sweet repeated bodyslams on the Funks, perfectly executed slides through Jimmy Jack’s legs, and a couple amazing hot tags.

Hart eventually tags in when JYD’s down but takes punches from Haiti Kid. In the melee, Hoss hits JYD with a megaphone, then Hoss slams Haiti Kid, and Hart pins Haiti 1-2-3 as the Funks take out Steamboat. What an exciting night at the matches. **1/2

Ahhh nahh nobody else needs to see this. 1/10
